Zusammenfassung
Funktionelle Elektrostimulation (FES) ist grundsätzlich eine sichere und nebenwirkungsarme Therapieoption. Trotzdem gibt es eine Reihe von körperlichen oder psychischen Grunderkrankungen, bei denen vor einer Behandlung oder während einer Behandlungsserie eine Abstimmung mit dem behandelten Arzt unbedingt erforderlich ist. Als kritische Beispiele sind thrombose- oder blutungsorientierte Probleme, Epilepsie, Hauterkrankungen oder -verletzungen etc. zu nennen. Auch bei Vorliegen oder späterem Bekanntwerden einer Schwangerschaft ist eine fachärztliche Koordination notwendig. Besondere Vorsicht ist bei Vorhandensein von Implantaten angebracht. Passive Implantate können bei einem extern ausgelösten Stromfluss in elektrochemische Wechselwirkung mit dem Organismus treten. Ähnliches gilt für aktive Implantate wie Herzschrittmacher, Kardioverter, Neurostimulationsimplantate oder Medikamentenpumpen, für die die Gefahr schwerster bis lebensbedrohlicher Funktionsstörungen hinzukommt.
