Zusammenfassung
Das Rektum wird oft nur als das Organ, in dem sich ein Rektumkarzinom entwickelt, gesehen. Es ist jedoch viel mehr als nur das, nicht nur durch seine funktionelle Anatomie und seine komplexe dreidimensionale Einordnung im Pelvis, sondern auch durch die Vielfalt der Erkrankungen, die dieses Organ betreffen können. In diesem Kapitel wird ein Überblick über die diagnostische Strategie und die evidenzbasierten therapeutischen Prinzipien der Rektumchirurgie gegeben. Dies beinhaltet die benignen inkl. der funktionellen und vor allem die malignen Erkrankungen, die eine erfahrene Behandlung benötigen, um zu akzeptablen onkologischen Ergebnissen zu gelangen. Die Therapie der Rektumerkrankungen unterliegt den Leitlinien von einer Großzahl an Fachgesellschaften und kann nur Hand in Hand mit anderen Fachrichtungen (wie z. B. Gastroenterologen, Onkologen, Radiotherapeuten und Radiologen) durchgeführt werden.
