Zusammenfassung
Angesichts der Abhängigkeit weiter Teile der Netzwerkforschung von Befragungen der Akteure wurde spätestens seit den 1970er Jahren die Frage nach der Verlässlichkeit solcher Befragungen gestellt. Insbesondere Bernard, Killworth und Sailer untersuchten in einer Reihe von Aufsätzen den Grad der Übereinstimmung/Abweichung zwischen den » tatsächlichen «, von einem externen Beobachter rekonstruierten, Interaktionen und Beziehungen einerseits und den Beschreibungen dieser Interaktionen und Beziehungen durch die befragten Akteure andererseits (vgl. z. B. Bernard et al. 1984). Ihr zusammenfassendes, auch von Krackhardt (S. 109) zitiertes Urteil lautete: » Informants are inaccurate; memory does decay exponentially with time … And on top of all this there appears to be systematic distortion in how informants recall just about everything. (Bernard et al.1984, S. 509) «.
