Zusammenfassung
George Caspar Homans (1919 – 1989) ist einer der bekanntesten amerikanischen Soziologen, der unter anderem gemeinsam mit Robert K. Merton und Talcott Parsons in den 1930er Jahren an der Universität in Harvard lernte, lehrte und forschte. Charakteristisch für diese Zeit ist die Auseinandersetzung mit und Weiterentwicklung von (struktur-)funktionalistischen Ansätzen, insbesondere unter Einfluss der Sozialanthropologie Malinowskis und Radcliffe-Browns, aber auch des Soziologen Durkheim. Gleichzeitig war die amerikanische Soziologie der 1930 – 1950er Jahre von einer reichhaltigen Ansammlung einzelner Fallstudien geprägt, in denen die Beschreibungen und Analysen der Strukturen einzelner sozialer Gruppen im Mittelpunkt standen.
