Kurzzusammenfassung

Which programmatic positions were taken up in the manifestos of German parties for the European Election 2014? The article seeks to provide an answer to this question by introducing the Duisburg Manifesto Approach (DMA). The DMA is a tool for the content analysis of electoral programmes. The policy-positions of seven major German political parties were measured and analyzed on a total of 51 predefined issues, laid out on three different dimensions (the socio-economic dimension; the socio-cultural dimension; and the European dimension). By applying the DMA we are able to illustrate that the party programmatic of German political parties diff ered quite significantly in the assessment of socio-economic, socio-cultural and European issues. Indeed, a multitude of highly controversial issues existed between the German parties, which, however, cannot be fully explained by referring to traditional party alliances.
