Abstract
The calbindins, calbindin-D28K and calbindin-D9K, were discovered about 25 years ago as a vitamin D-inducible calcium-binding protein in chick and rat intestinal mucosa, respectively. The calbindins have now been identified in a wide variety of different types of tissues. Despite detailed information on their biochemical and physical properties, the exact function of the calbindins in epithelial transport and their role in non-epithelial tissues have not yet been resolved.
