„Normal“ ist der Gegensatz zu „abnormal“, Krankheit ist im allgmeinen abnormal. Krankheiten zu heilen ist die Aufgabe der Psych-Iatrie.„Normalität“ ist somit ein zentraler Begriff der Psychiatrie, den man nicht umgehen kann. Implizit oder explizit hat jeder Therapeut eine Vorstellung von Normalität, anders kann er nicht Therapeut sein. Offner und Sabshin nennen vier Bedeutungen von „normal“.
