Abstract

Today the indication for a permanent colostomy after removal of the rectum is given in fewer instances than previously, for the following reasons:

  1. 1.

    Deep anterior resection is carried out.

  2. 2.

    Tumours are excised transanally.

  3. 3.

    Tumours are excised transrectally.

  4. 4.

    Early polypectomy is carried out.

  5. 5.

    Colorectal tumours have been found to migrate in an oral direction.
