Part of the book series: Topics in Current Physics ((TCPHY,volume 28))

Abstract

The data which are critical to any physical phenomenon are the results of observations. Hence, this chapter is fundamental to the entire book. Although in Chap.1 we briefly touched on the area of field measurements, we will treat the techniques and results much more exhaustively here. It is appropriate to classify the sections of the chapter according to the objects of measurement and the techniques employed. First we discuss the in situ measurement of precursor gases such as carbonyl sulfide, then in situ sampling and analysis of aerosol particles, followed by ground-based remote sensing of the aerosol layer by lidar, and finally satellite remote sensing of the layer.
