In order to define a lesion as ischemic in individual cases not only was the type of lesion considered — for example, a selective parenchymal necrosis — but also especially the lesion pattern. From general findings from grand-mal epilepsies there is developed a gradient of “ictal lesions” with various vulnerabilities to ischemia.
