Abstract
The E colicins are a group of bacterial plasmid-coded toxins which use the E. coli cell surface receptor, the btuB gene product. Nine different colicins are distinguished based upon the specificity of interaction of the colicins with their immunity proteins (Males & Stocker, 1982; Cooper & James, 1984). The seventeen plasmids which carry the genes for the E colicins and their immunity proteins are small (about 7 kb, except for plasmids ColE2imm-K317 and ColE6-CT14 which are about 5 kb and 11 kb, respectively), multicopy and nonconjugative (Watsonet al., 1981; Mock & Pugsley, 1982; Cooper & James, 1984). Analyses of these plasmids, using various restriction enzymes, have previously shown that the plasmids ColE2 to E9 are structurally similar (Lawrence & James, 1984; Watson et al., 1985a; Watson et al., 1985b; Chak & James, 1986), whereas plasmid ColEl is distinct (see Chan et al., 1985). More recently, biochemical and nucleotide sequencing analyses of these plasmids have revealed that colicins E2 to E9 are closely related (Toba et al., 1988; Chak et al., 1991; for details see papers by James et al., Lau, and Masaki et al. of this volume). Here we refer to plasmids ColE2 to E9 as the ColE2-related plasmids.
