Abstract
Nitroglycerin has been widely used for 100 years in preventing and relieving symptoms of angina pectoris. Angina pectoris results when the heart requires more oxygen than can be supplied by the coronary arterial system. The major symptom is chest discomfort. Nitroglycerin is a potent smooth muscle relaxer and vasodilator; it works to bring the demand and supply of oxygen to the heart into a more favorable balance, thus, relieving discomfort.
