New Trends in Computer-Assisted Radiotherapy with Conventional Radiation

Cancer Therapy

Abstract

Radiotherapy as a local treatment modality aims at the treatment of localized tumors. As local or locoregional failure of therapy is the cause of death in about one-third of all tumor patients, the development of methods for improved local tumor control is still expected to dominate research activities in the next 5–10 years (de Vita 1983; Kuttig 1987). The other important aspect of these research and development activities, of course, is to reduce side effects in normal tissue and to improve the quality of life of tumor patients after treatment.
