Drug Metabolism in the Skin

Pharmacology of the Skin II

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 87 / 2))

Abstract

Drug metabolism is a general phenomenon which is essential in order to remove foreign compounds from the body. Although the liver is the major organ which metabolizes systemically applied drugs, it has become evident that extrahepatic tissues contain drug-metabolizing enzymes. Various aspects of the metabolism of xenobiotics in the skin have been reviewed (Wattenberg and Leong 1971; Wiebel and Gelboin 1977; Pannatier et al. 1978; Bickers and Kappas 1980; Noonan and Wester 1983; Bickers 1983; Vermorken et al. 1985; Bickers et al. 1986; Goerz and Merk 1987).
