Cell to Cell Signals in Mammalian Development

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIH,volume 26))

Abstract

Polypeptide growth factors have been recognized as important determinants In the regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation (for a review: Sporn and Roberts, 1988). They exert their mitogenic or differentiating activity at nanomolar concentrations by binding to specific high-affinity receptor molecules localized in the plasma membrane. The ultimate biological action is dependent on the nature of the target cell. The number of identified growth factors is still rapidly growing. Several of these factors have been purified to homogeneity and their primary amino acid sequence has been determined completely or in part.
