Mitochondria

Paramecium

Abstract

Studies of protozoa have made an important contribution to the early history of mitochondrial biogenesis (see Swift and Wolstenholme 1969). Mitochondrial DNAs of Tetrahymena and Paramecium were among the first mitochondrial DNAs isolated (Suyama and Preer 1965) and the study of the mitochondrial genetics of Paramecium started as early as 1969 with the isolation of drug-resistant mutations (Beale 1969).
