Abstract
The diagnosis of congenital nevi, observed in about 1% of newborn [1, 4, 37, 39, 47] is defined by presence of nevi at birth. Besides the frequently occurring small nevi, less frequently larger forms are also found. Different opinions are given in the literature regarding the minimum size at which a nevus may be classified as a giant nevus (nevus giganteus) [3, 11,16, 19, 21, 25]. The most plausible definition may be given by Kopf et al. [21], describing nevi with a diameter of more than 20 cm as giant nevi, whereas “medium-sized nevi” are between 19.5 and 1.5 cm in diameter, and small nevi less than 1cm (Fig. la-c, Table 1). According to Greeley et al. [11], the term giant nevus is justified even if the lesion exceeds 900 cm2. Smaller lesions may be included in this group if they cover essential parts of an anatomical region, e.g., the face or an extremity [20] (Fig. 11).
