Abstract

The thyroid gland and its functional unit, the thyroid follicle plays a very important and central role in the endocrine system. Controlled by the pituitary gland via the hormone thyrotropin (TSH), the thyroid then controls virtually every cell in the body via the production and secretion of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 (1).
