Anti-Inflammatory Agents

Steroids as Anti-Inflammatory Agents

Pharmacology of the Eye

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 69))

Abstract

Corticosteroids have provided an effective means of controlling many ocular inflammatory conditions for over 30 years. Although information concerning the use of these drugs continues to expand rapidly, the pharmacologic action of steroids in ocular tissues has not been clearly defined. Interpretations of clinical and experimental studies with steroids are often limited by our lack of knowledge concerning the basic pharmacology of these hormones in the eye. In order to develop improved therapeutic approaches, it is essential the devise quantitative studies of drug efficacy (and side effects) relevant to specific ocular conditions. Recent advances in endocrinology and immunology provide some useful insights which may help to explain the observed steroid effects and provide new methods to employ these agents in the treatment of ophthalmic disorders.
