Abstract

The dependence of behaviour patterns on circulating levels of steroids in adult birds is well established (for a survey see Silver et al. 1979). However, only recently has attention been focussed on hormonal and neuronal development in very young birds during their first few days of live (cf. Adkins 1975, 1978, Hutchison 1978; for survey see Goldman 1978, and Plapinger and McEwen 1978). A search through the literature indicates that information on the influence of hormones on early developmental processes is only available from a few avian species (mainly the Japanese quail and the domestic chick), and, in most cases, only one steroid has been looked for.
