Abstract
Juvenile bone cysts are benign, tumor-like, expansive growing cystic bone· lesions. These lesions appear predominantly in children between seven and 14 years of age, boys being twice as often affected as girls. The most frequent location of the disease is the proximal metaphysis of the upper arm and upper leg. The incidence in the upper arm is the highest, from 38% to 57% (Garceau and Gregory, 1954; Spence et al, 1969), followed by femoral involvement with 35% and tibial disease in 13%. Cysts with immediate contact to the growth plate, which usually is not penetrated, are termed active cysts. They are more frequent during the first decade. In later years, latent cysts predominate, located at the border between metaphysis and diaphysis.
