Effect of Adrenergic Blockade on Cerebral Ischemia

  • Conference paper
Brain and Heart Infarct II

Abstract

Animal models, which simulate cerebral blood flow disturbances, are commonly used in modern pharmacology (6, 25). In the past 5 years, our group has intensively studied the problems of CNS ischemia, using mainly two types of models: the oligemia model in cats (incomplete ischemia) and the model of temporary ischemia in the isolated perfused rat head (complete ischemia). Besides vasoactive substances, which proved to be without any protective action on the ischemically disturbed brain (10, 11, 14, 39), we tested different drugs acting on the monoaminergic system. In the present study, a barbiturate (pentobarbital/ Nembutal) was compared with the ergot compound DH ergotoxine. Both drugs are known to exert specific effects on the monoaminergic system of the CNS.
