Tumor-Associated Antigens in Bronchogenic Carcinoma

Immunodiagnosis and Immunotherapy of Malignant Tumors

Abstract

In recent years several proteins, often associated with fetal growth, have been recognized in tumor tissues, serum, and other body fluids of patients with certain malignancies. GOLD and FREEDMAN described the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) (5), which was first thought to be specific for colonic cancer, and ABELEV and TATARINOW classified the alpha-1 fetoprotein (AFP) (1, 14) as a carcinofetal antigen associated with hepatoma. The antigens, however, together with other serum proteins, for example, ferritin (9), nonspecific crossreacting antigen (NCA) (8), and the pregnancy-associated α2-glycoprotein (α2-PAG) (3) are also detectable in a variety of other neoplasias.
