Cardiac Glycosides

Part of the book series: International Boehringer Mannheim Symposia ((BOEHRINGER))

Abstract

William Withering’s “An Account of the Foxglove” was translated into German 9 months after its publication by a medical doctor in Leipzig, Christian Friedrich Michaelis (Withering, 1786). This indicates an early German awareness of Withering’s important clinical investigations which started in 1775. I find it highly appropriate that’s a “Symposium on Cardiac Glycosides” is being held in Bonn some 200 years later to discuss recent advances in our knowledge of the cardiac glycosides.

This work was supported by grants from “The Norwegian Council on Cardiovascular Diseases”, The University of Oslo, and “The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities”.
