Phylogenetisch war die Fähigkeit des Säugetierorganismus zur Speicherung von Energie im Fettgewebe eine wesentliche Voraussetzung des Uberlebens. Die Ungeregeltheit des Nahrungsangebots erforderte, in Zeiten des Überangebots Energiedepots anlegen zu können, die in Zeiten des Mangels für die Bedürfnisse des Organismus mobilisiert werden können.
