Abstract
It appears probable that all cells of the meristematic region of plant roots are joined together by plasmodesmata. Clowes and Juniper (1968) have estimated that even the smallest meristematic cells would have between 103 and 105 connections. The patterns of loss and ‘dilution’ (through wall expansion) lead to the distribution of plasmodesmata found within the mature parts of the root system. Connections remain between living cells, but not through the walls of mature xylem vessel elements.
