Abstract
This book is the outcome of an international microsurgical workshop. The workshop was help with two particular goals in mind. One was to discuss the relevance of the current microsurgical models in the species rat for transplantation research in general. The other was to introduce young transplantation surgeons to the problems and implications of certain experimental transplantation models. In general, the question should be raise whether a given experimental model is of practical value, i.e., whether it is a preclinical model that can contribute to the solution of clinical problems or whether it is of purely theoretical value. The present volume addresses the questions raised by clinicians as to the applicability of preclinical models. Therefore, it attempts to analyze the preclinical relevance of microsurgical models in rats.
