Abstract

The prevalence of cirrhosis in population correlates well with per capita consumption of ethanol, regardless of the type of beverage consumed (GRANT et al. 1988; PARRISH et al. 1991). Moreover, it has been shown that the risk of developing cirrhosis increases with the total amount of ethanol consumed over a lifetime (LELBACH 1974, 1975). An individual who consumes about 200g ethanol (about 200z of 86 proof whisky) a day for 20 years has a 50% chance of manifesting cirrhosis (LELBACH 1974, 1975).
