The role of FDG-PET in the management of oral squamous cell carcinoma (ICD-O-DA M-8070/3)

  • Chapter
PET in Clinical Oncology

Abstract

Worldwide, oral and pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma account for an estimated incidence of about 575 000 tumors and 366 000 tumor deaths every year and, therefore, represent the majority of all head and neck neoplasms [55]. Regarding the entirety of tumor death in the United States, the proportion of oral and pharyngeal cancer approximates 3.8% for males and 1.3% for females, while in the western parts of Germany rates are 6.7% for males and 1.1% for females [13, 47]. The cancer registry of the “DÖSAK” (Deutsch Österreichisch Schweizerischer Arbeitskreis für Tumoren im Kiefer-Gesichtsbereich) recognized an average-relative 5-year survival rate of 49% on the basis of about 10000 documented cases [16]. For decades, smoking and alcohol abuse have been identified as substantial risk factors [8, 14, 5656], approximately two-thirds of oropharyngeal cancer manifestations are related to smoking in the western world. By contrast, in India and Sri Lanka this kind of cancer reaches a proportion of about 40% of all neoplasm and is associated with the long-term consumption of betel. In these countries, the majority of oral cancer patients are females [37].
