Abstract

The risk of port-site recurrence after laparoscopic management of digestive cancer is a serious cause of concern for digestive surgeons. Among the various factors affecting tumor port-site seeding and growth, the immune changes induced by the laparoscopic procedure may play a major role. These changes in cell-mediated immunity have mainly been investigated in experimental studies, and information on the immunological status in patients is limited, restricted to a small number of acute phase protein, cytokine and hormone serological assays in few clinical studies, sometimes linked to investigations on systemic immune status.
