Zusammenfassung

Das Rauchen gehört ähnlich wie der Genuss von Alkohol zu den Gewohnheiten des Menschen mit den größten gesundheitlichen und sozialen Auswirkungen. Und nur wenige Gewohnheiten des Menschen werden leidenschaftlicher und auch kontroverser in der Gesellschaft diskutiert. Dem einen gilt Rauchen als Ausdruck der Gelassenheit und Gutmütigkeit („Wo man raucht, da kannst ruhig harren - böse Menschen haben nie Zigarren“, Volksweisheit). Für andere ist das Rauchen Ausdruck höchsten Glücks, das selbst der Himmel nicht überbieten kann („Wenn man im Himmel nicht rauchen darf, dann gehe ich nicht hin“, Mark Twain). Andere hingegen warnen vor den gesundheitlichen Gefahren („So geht es mit Tabak und mit Rum: erst bist du froh, dann fällst du um“, W. Busch) oder sehen schließlich das Rauchen als das höchste aller Übel („Alle schlechten Eigenschaften entwickeln sich in der Familie. Das fängt mit Mord an und geht über Betrug und Trunksucht bis zum Rauchen“, A. Hitchcock).
