Abstract
In the noninvasive measurement of systolic time intervals (STI), particularly the pre-ejection period (PEP) and its quotient with the left ventricular ejection time, PEP/LVET, considerable difficulty may be encountered when determining the end of ejection from a peripheral pulse wave. It is most notable when the patient’s vasculature is under the influence of depressant anesthetics and the in-cisura becomes less distinct (1). Additionally, the surgical setting may well interfere with clean transduction of heart sounds. A simpler and more expedient STI measurement involves the time from the Q wave of the electrocardiogram (ECG) to the foot of the peripheral pulse — the QF interval. Previous animal work with this interval has shown it to be a close correlate of PEP, since it is composed of PEP and pulse wave transmission times (T x ) (2).
