Abstract
Bone marrow was used for the treatment of various forms of anemia or leukemia as early as 1891. A true transplant attempt, for severe aplastic anemia, was first reported in 1939. These experiments preceded, of course, the recognition of histocompatibility antigens in humans. They were carried out without immunosuppressive or cytotoxic pretreatment of the patient and were uniformly unsuccessful.
