Das zu den Isoprenlipiden zählende Cholesterin ist neben den Phosphoglyceriden und Sphingolipiden (► Kap. 22) ein typisches Membranlipid tierischer Zellen. Darüber hinaus ist Cholesterin die Vorstufe der Steroidhormone (► Kap. 40) und der Gallensäuren (► Kap. 61 und 62).
