Zusammenfassung

Die Geschichte der hepatobiliären Tumorchirurgie beginnt mit Kenntnissen der Anatomie der Leber, des Gallengangssystems und der schrittweisen Erforschung ihrer Organfunktion. In den ältesten Dokumenten aus Mesopotamien etwa um 3.500 v. Chr. sind auf Keilschrifttafeln eindeutige Hinweise zur Leberanatomie der Sumerer, Babylonier und Akkader überliefert, wobei einzelne Organe beschrieben und mit bestimmten Funktionen bzw. Eigenschaften belegt worden sind. So war dem Herzen der Sitz der Intelligenz und dem Blut der Sitz des Lebens zuerkannt. Der Leber wurde eine besondere Bedeutung beigemessen, sie wurde als das schicksalstragende Organ bezeichnet. Priester, die sich zugleich als Hellseher und Wahrsager verstanden, haben die Leber der geopferten Tiere besonders untersucht und beschrieben. Nach der Beschaffenheit der Oberfläche, Konfiguration und Konsistenz wurde die Vorhersage getroffen und als schicksalsbestimmend angesehen. Gefundene Tafeln aus dieser Zeit etwa 2.000 v. Chr. zeigen Felder mit verschiedenen Deutungen belegt, welche die Priester zu lesen und zu deuten verstanden und somit Vorhersagen treffen konnten.
