Die Prävalenz der Adipositas GradII (BMI ≥40 kg/m2) hat in den letzten Jahren deutlich zugenommen. Neuere Untersuchungen zeigen, dass in den USA 3% der Männer und 7,3% der Frauen eine Adipositas Grad III aufweisen. Ursache hierfür ist neben einer Fehlernährung der zunehmende Bewegungsmangel, ebenso spielt die genetische Prädisposition eine wichtige Rolle.
