Eine Reihe metabolischer Risikofaktoren für koronare Herzkrankheit, Herzinfarkt und kardiovaskuläre Mortalität tritt typischerweise gemeinsam auf. Verschiedene Bezeichnungen wurden in den letzten Jahrzehnten zur Beschreibung der Kombination dieser kardiovaskulären Risikofaktoren verwendet; heute hat sich der Begriff des „metabolischen Syndroms“ weitgenend durchgesetzt.
