Die klassische Einteilung von Prävention diff erenziert zwischen Primär-, Sekundär- und Tertiärprävention. Neuere Definitionen unterteilen in Begriffe der universellen, selektiven und indizierten Prävention. Primäre Prävention hat zum Ziel, die Entstehung von Essstörungen und deren Neuerkrankungen zu verhindern, Risikofaktoren vorzubeugen und protektive Faktoren zu fördern. Maßnahmen der Primärprävention sind an gesunde Personen ohne Essstörungssymptome gerichtet. Das Ziel der Sekundärprävention besteht in Früherkennung und Intervention, um ein Fortschreiten der Erkrankung und die Entwicklung einer voll ausgeprägten Störung zu verhindern. Maßnahmen der Sekundärprävention setzen an bereits bestehenden Risikofaktoren an und zielen daraufab, diese zu reduzieren. Als Tertiärprävention wird die Vermeidung einer Verschlechterung eines voll ausgeprägten klinischen Krankheitsbildes bezeichnet. Sie umfasst Maßnahmen zur Rehabilitation und Rückfallprophlyaxe.
