Im Bereich psychischer Erkrankungen sind Komorbiditäten, d. h. das gleichzeitige Vorhandensein von mehreren psychischen Störungen, relativ häufi Hier treffen dann die Diagnosekriterien von mehreren Störungen gleichzeitig zu. Aus den Daten des Bundes-Gesundheits-Survey 1998 (Wittchen u. Jacobi 2001) ist zu ersehen, dass 52% der diagnostizierten Fälle nur eine Störung aufwiesen, während 48% die Kriterien von zwei, und mehr Störungen gleichzeitig erfüllten. Diese recht hohen Komorbiditäten führen zu Diskussionen, inwieweit die beschreibenden Diagnoseschemata wie ICD-10 bzw. DSMIV wirklich unabhängige Diagnosen erfassen. Aufgrund der genannten Daten ist zu erwarten, dass auch bei den Essstörungen gehäuft Komorbiditäten vorliegen.
