Psychische Störungen können als isolierte, einzelne Erkrankungen beobachtet werden, sie können aber auch zusammen mit anderen psychischen oder medizinischen Erkrankungen auftreten (Komorbidität). Traditionelle europäische Klassifi kationssysteme haben versucht, die Erkrankung und Symptomatologie einer Person in einer-möglichst ätiologisch begründeten — Haupt diagnose zusammenzufassen. Das deskriptive, an operationalisierten Kriterien orientierte amerikanische DSM-System lässt dagegen eine Vielzahl von gleichzeitigen (komorbiden) Diagnosen psychischer Störungen zu.
