Unter die unipolaren depressiven Störungen, die durch ausschließlich depressive, nicht aber manische oder hypomanische Phasen gekennzeichnet sind, sind nach ICD-10 und DSM-IV singuläre und rezidivierende typische bzw. majore depressive Episoden und die dysthyme Störung subsumiert. Bereits ältere Arbeiten zeigten für diese Störungsbilder einen klaren Trend zu höheren Erkrankungsraten bei Frauen (Übersicht bei Nolen-Hoeksema 1990). Während der letzten Jahre lieferte eine Reihe methodisch anspruchsvoller Studien hierzu neue Evidenzen. Eine Übersicht über die wichtigsten Arbeiten gibt ⊡ Tab. 19.1
