Seit der Entwicklung des Elektroenzephalogramms (EEG) durch Hans Berger im Jahr 1929 wird versucht, medikamentös induzierte Veränderungen des menschlichen Hirnstrombildes zur Klassifikation psychopharmakologischer Substanzen und zur Beurteilung ihrer Pharmakodynamik im Zielorgan, dem Gehirn, einzusetzen. Diesbezügliche Untersuchungen basierten ursprünglich auf visueller Evaluation (Bente u. Itil 1954; Fink 1959), in den 1960-er und 1970-er Jahren auf der computergestützten quantitativen Analyse von Einzelableitungen (Fink 1975; Herrmann 1982; Itil 1974; Saletu 1976) und seit den 1980-er Jahren auf jener von Mehrkanalableitungen und darauf folgendem EEG-Mapping (Anderer et al. 1987; Buchsbaum et al. 1985; Dierks et al. 1993; Duffy et al. 1981; Galderisi et al. 1996; Itil et al. 1985; John et al. 1988; Lehmann et al. 1993; Maurer u. Dierks 1991; Saletu et al. 1987; Saletu et al. 1990a, Saletu et al. 1990b, Saletu et al. 1991a, Saletu et al. 1991b, Saletu et al. 1996a, Saletu et al. 1996b, Saletu et al. 1997, Saletu et al. 2002, Saletu-Zyhlarz et al. 1997). So gelang es mittels Pharmako-EEG, objektiv und quantitativ zu bestimmen, ob, wie, wann und in welchem Dosisbereich eine Substanz eine Wirkung auf das menschliche Zentralnervensystem (ZNS) ausübt (Saletu et al. 2002).
