Comparing Basic Human Values in East and West Germany

Abstract

Even 20 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, studies in the social sciences point to persisting differences in attitudes and values between citizens in East and West Germany. These differences are attributed to the different paths of political and social development that East and West Germany followed from the end of World War II until the reunification in 1990. In West Germany, a liberal democratic regime and a market economy were installed, while in East Germany a socialist regime and centrally planned economy were established. Both German states, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) were strongly integrated into the respective coalitions of the Cold War
