Abstract
Asking for the function and role of public relations operations within the brand and product communication we have to agree with Bruhn/Ahlers (2005) who say that it is not expedient to argue about a ‘supremacy’ of marketing or public relations management within corporate communications. At the same time it has to be attested that within the economic and management literature there is hardly any other subject that is more ‘underexposed’ than the question, which concrete functions public relations operations have in a closer or broader context of the marketing of an organization and its outputs.
Examples of practice show that e.g. in the case of products with image sensibility like cars, brand and product communication belongs to corporate communications. Based on a case study the lecture will develop a theoretical frame for the functional positioning of brand PR and product PR within corporate communications. On the basis of modern systems theoretical approaches about organizational communication (Szyszka 2008) public relations management will be described as the handling of differences and discrepancies which exist on the level of knowledge, meaning and estimation between an organization and its central reference groups but also between the different reference groups of an organization. In order to show basic problems of public relations management, central elements of communication processes (message, information, understanding) and processes of opinion making (image, prestige, reputation) will be exposed. From this context a central characteristic of public relations operations can be derived: They operate according to the advocate principle and therefore look for the distribution of information through multipliers.
In this context brand and product PR can be developed as different functions of communication management which deal with the communication of central profile attributes of organizations and its performances or rather the central conclusions in content about products of an organization.
