Die zunehmende Verbreitung serieller TV-Formate ist ein Phänomen von globaler Bedeutung (Mortimer 2005). In Deutschland hat mittlerweile jeder größere Sender ein ganzes Portfolio an TV-Serien in seinem Programm und einzelne Formate wie „Big Brother“, „Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS)“ oder „Germany's Next Topmodel“ gehören zu den Sendungen mit den höchsten Einschaltquoten überhaupt. Der besondere Erfolg dieser Art von Fernsehprogramm schlägt sich neben der großen Anzahl an neuen Produktionen und einem beachtlichen Zuschauerinteresse in einer entsprechenden Medienberichterstattung nieder (Rowland 2006; Hill 2005). Kaum ein Tag vergeht, ohne dass einschlägige Zeitschriften und Boulevardmagazine über diese Sendungen und ihre Protagonisten berichteten.
