Das Kapitel beginnt mit einer Definition von Onlinesucht und der Beschreibung ihrer wichtigsten Merkmale. Zu diesem Zweck werden auch die derzeit am häufigsten verwendeten aktuellen Verfahren zur Diagnose des Problemverhaltens ausführlich dokumentiert. In einem zweiten Abschnitt werden aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse zur Onlinesucht bei Kindern und Jugendlichen vorgestellt und analysiert. Ob Onlinesucht eine Krankheit ist im Sinne des ICD- 10 der World Health Organization (Internationale Statistische Klassifikation der Krankheiten und verwandter Gesundheitsprobleme; vgl. ICD-10-GM, DIMDI, 2008) oder des DSM-IV der American Psychiatric Association (Diagnostisches und Statistisches Manual Psychischer Störungen, DSM-IV-TR, Saβ, Wittchen, Zaudik & Houben, 2003), und worin die wissenschaftliche und die therapeutische Bedeutung des Expertenstreits zu dieser Frage liegt, soll in einem weiteren Abschnitt geklärt werden. Auch die Frage, ob Onlinesucht eventuell ein kulturspezifisches, insbesondere im asiatischen Raum auftretendes Problemverhalten ist, wird mit Blick auf das frühe und bis heute starke Engagement von Wissenschaftlern und Expertenteams aus Asien in einem eigenen Abschnitt behandelt. Anschlieβend werden die wichtigsten Beratungs- und Behandlungsansätze zur Therapie exzessiver Internetnutzung skizziert. Mit einem Ausblick auf Forschungsdefizite und notwendige Anpassungen unter systematischem Einbezug der Erkenntnisse der Jugendmedienforschung schlieβt das Kapitel ab.
