Die neuere Literatur zu globaler Ungleichheit lässt sich, grob vereinfacht, in zwei Zugänge aufteilen. Zum einen steht das gegenwärtige Interesse der Ungleichheitssoziologie an den globalen Bezügen ihres Themas in engem Zusammenhang mit der seit den 1990er Jahren anhaltenden Diskussion über Globalisierung. Entsprechend wählen viele Autoren einen gegenwartsdiagnostischen Zugang, fragen also nach den Konsequenzen relativ neuer Phänomene der Grenzüberschreitung und Verflechtung für gesellschaftliche Strukturen der Ungleichheit. Daneben gewinnt gegenwärtig ein Forschungszweig an Zulauf, der sich „genuin“ und unabhängig von aktuellen Globalisierungsschüben mit globaler Ungleichheit befasst und eine Reihe weltweiter Ungleichverteilungen — bezüglich Einkommen, Gesundheit, Lebenserwartung, Bildung etc. — zu erfassen sucht (vgl. McGillivray 2006a, Milanovic 2005).
