Die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich wird weltweit tiefer. Internationale Statistiken liefern ein ernüchterndes Bild: Während China und ein paar weitere Schwellenländer gewaltige Wachstumsraten melden und mit ihren Devisenreserven die weltweiten Finanzmärkte aufmischen, gibt es in den restlichen Entwicklungsländern nur geringe Fortschritte im Kampf gegen Armut und Hunger, Krankheiten und Analphabetentum. Zudem bedrohen Umweltprobleme vor allem die Menschen in armen Ländern. Der wachsende Energiehunger reicherer Länder wird zunehmend zulasten der Nahrungsversorgung der Armen und auf Kosten des Weltklimas gestillt. Mittlerweile verbraucht die Menschheit deutlich mehr Ressourcen, als der Planet langfristig hergibt. Statt die notwendigen Mittel für die Sicherung der globalen Zukunft bereitzustellen, steigen seit ein paar Jahren wieder die Rüstungsausgaben. Und schließlich: Nur durch kühne Rechentricks gelingt es den Industriestaaten, ihre unzureichende Entwicklungshilfe zu kaschieren und steigende Entwicklungshilfezukaschieren aundsteigen.
