Nach der Niederlage der royalistischen Truppen (1822) bildete das Gebiet des vormaligen kolonialen Gerichtsbezirks Real Audiencia de Quito zusammen mit den späteren Staaten Kolumbien und Venezuela Teil des auf Initiative Simon Bolivars gegründeten Großverbands Gram Colombia. Dieses politische Gebilde zerfiel schon 1830, als sich Venezuela und der südliche Verwaltungsdistrikt Quito zu unabhängigen Republiken erklärten. Der Name des neuen Staates, der im Gründungsjahr knapp 600.000 Einwohner zählte, leitet sich von der nahe der Stadt Quito verlaufenden Äquatorlinie her. Erster Präsident der Republik Ecuador wurde der vormalige Kommandant der grancolombianischen Südarmee, der venezolanische General Juan José Flores.
