Zusammenfassung

Repräsentation ist eines der zentralen Probleme demokratischer Systeme. Welche Art von Beziehung soll zwischen den Bürgern und ihren gewählten Repräsentanten bestehen, damit ein politisches System zu Recht als demokratisch bezeichnet und sein Politikoutput als legitim angesehen werden kann? Welche Beziehungen bestehen in der Realität als Ergebnis demokratischer Wahlen von Repräsentanten und wie soll diese Realität sowohl normativ als auch im Sinne der Konsequenzen für die Funktionsweise des Systems bewertet werden?

Dieses Kapitel wurde zuerst 1991 unter dem Titel “European Community politics and electoral representation: Evidence from the 1989 European Election Study” im European Journal of Political Research (19:105–127) veröffentlicht. Die von den Autoren durchgesehene Übersetzung ins Deutsche besorgte Oskar Niedermayer.
